Angels & Demons is a book and a movie, sequel to the DaVinci Code. The title was inspiration for our final project in Illustration Techniques class. Most of these students are sophomore C.D. majors, not necessarily Illustration majors. This course involves mastering traditional media: pen and ink; scratchboard; watercolor; and for this final project, acrylic paint.Continue reading “Angels & Demons Illustration Project”

ELVIS Face on Tortilla! FAKE!
The ELVIS Tortilla is a fake, a hoax! I made it to publicize the lecture, Rockin’ Las Americas. I apologize if anyone takes offense. I am a big fan of Elvis and of Mexico. The Elvis Tortilla wasn’t easy. Jesus and Hello Kitty are easy; they make toasters especially for their fans. Elvis takes real effort. (See Below.) RefriedContinue reading “ELVIS Face on Tortilla! FAKE!”
Hot Type at Lead Graffiti
Most of the Communication Design faculty traveled to Lead Grafitti in Newark, Delaware for a one-day letterpress workshop during winter break. We were joined by printmaker Evan Summer of the Fine Arts Dept. Lead Grafitti is a family-run studio that does fine printing (wedding invitations, for example), but also offers hands-on workshops. Our workshop involved creatingContinue reading “Hot Type at Lead Graffiti”
AIDS day ART
WORLD AIDS DAY December 1 is World AIDS Day. I knew AIDS before it had a name. In the 1980’s I lived in San Francisco in a household that included gay men. It was a time of palpable fear. Years later, when the scourge had a name, I lost a dear friend, a gifted photographer,Continue reading “AIDS day ART”

César Chávez: Éxito!
Éxito means success in Spanish. César Chávez has been in the U.S for just about two weeks. He first crossed the border on foot in Arizona. He has already forgiven the policeman there who forced him to kneel on the pavement with his hands up while drug dogs sniffed his backpack. Fortunately, César has sinceContinue reading “César Chávez: Éxito!”
Don’t Call it Sharadin Gallery Anymore.
Sharadin Gallery will soon have a new name, The Marlin and Regina Miller Gallery. I once proposed that after “Gallery” the words “of Art and Design” be added, to be more inclusive of design. Oddly enough, that modest proposal was met with fierce resistance from some faculty. KU Faculty Exhibition: Sept. 8 – Oct. 3,Continue reading “Don’t Call it Sharadin Gallery Anymore.”
Napoleon Digital Illustration
Got a Bamboo Fun Tablet by Wacom ($199) and have been experimenting with drawing and painting in Photoshop CS5. For this portrait of Napoleon, I began with a single reference image, an old print I bought in England over twenty years ago. I was in a used bookshop in Greenwich and found it in aContinue reading “Napoleon Digital Illustration”
Things I Carried: Ipad & Sketchbook
Back in sleepy Kutztown after 6 weeks of traveling through the Yucatan and Belize. I carried a sketchbook and an Ipad. My most recent on-the-road blog entries were done on the Ipad. WordPress for IOS worked pretty well. It doesn’t have the full toolset or versatility of the computer version of WordPress. I couldn’t manageContinue reading “Things I Carried: Ipad & Sketchbook”
